Hello, my name is Poppy and I am a Yorkshire Terrier and I would like to introduce myself to you by telling you my life story so far.
Four years ago, I was born in an Irish Puppy Farm and fortunately I was taken out of the awful place by a Rescue Centre. It was very upsetting leaving my brothers and sisters but I had no choice.
I spent a little time in the Rescue but I don’t know in human terms how long it was. It was then decided that I should move to another Rescue Centre which wasn’t too bad, anything rather than being in the Puppy Farm.
Eventually a lady came and thought she would like me to live with her but by this time, I just didn’t know who or what I was doing. Anyway, this lady took me into her home and tried really hard to help me settle down. I did feel quite settled until the grandchildren came to visit and they made me feel very nervous. One of them, used to tease me with treats with one hand and then hit me on the back with the other hand. He found this very funny but I didn’t like it at all.
The lady knew that I was a very nervous little girl and she thought I couldn’t be trusted around the grandchildren. It really should have been the other way round...! Every time these children came to visit, I would shake and run and try to hide. After about six months, the lady returned me to the Rescue Centre for me to be rehomed.
Nobody seemed to want a big eared, very nervous and terrified little dog so another ‘last chance’ Rescue Centre said that they would take me and, to start with, they put me in the same area as all the other big dogs. However, they saw that I was being bullied by these big dogs so the safest place for me to live was on a kitchen top where I had another little friend.
The Rescue Centre was dissolved and my last Rescue Centre turned out to be a miraculous place. Good food, comfortable bed, other small dogs to be with and plenty of fresh water. They were so good to me and even sent me to a lady who took off all my dirty, smelly, matted hair.
I didn’t spend a long time in this place before Mummy and Daddy came along to take me to their home. Oh, my, there was another female dog there called Coco and I wasn’t sure about her because she was a little bit bigger and stronger than me. I think they call her a Jack Russell Terrier and like me she was a rescue dog.
The last two years have been the best of my life with people who have loved and cared for me despite my nervousness and fear of Daddy. All men have frightened me because of things that happened in my past. I’ve been very lucky because Daddy has been very patient with me and Mummy has given me what she calls ‘drops’ (Flower Essences) to help me feel more confidence and take away my fear of life.
